25 Feb 2018 Ref-No#: 205

A woman bleeds for only two days every month. She bleeds for two days, and then does not see blood again for a full month. However, she experience all the symptoms of a period, i.e. backache, colour of blood, etc. What will be the ruling of this blood?

Answer

Wa’alaykum as Salam wa rahmatullahi wa baraktuhu,

Any bleeding that lasts for less than three days and nights; i.e. less than 72 hours and then ceases for fifteen days or more will not be regarded as Haidh, but Istihaadha. On the basis of this principle, it is evident that the woman mentioned in your query is experiencing Istihaadha and NOT Haidh as she is bleeding each time for less than 72 hours and the period between two flows is a full month which is much more than the prescribed minimum Paaki period of fifteen days. Thus, although this woman experiences all the symptoms of a period, i.e. backache, colour of blood, etc; it will still NOT be regarded as Haidh in Shari’ah but as Istihaadha, simply because the bleeding does not cover the minimum Haidh duration of three days and three nights (72 hours).
