Vaginal Discharge

As Salaamu Alaikum,
This is a very touchy fatwa. I’m trying to understand why vaginal discharge that occurs regularly invalidates wudu. On Islâmqa.info the evidence they gave as to why regular vaginal discharge invalidates wudu is the Hadith about istihadah. May I ask how this Hadith serves as evidence? Vaginal discharge isn’t blood which is why I want to understand how this Hadith serves as sufficient evidence that vaginal discharge breaks wudu. A separate scholar, said that vaginal discharge doesn’t break wudu because there isn’t any evidence to suggest this. I need proper clarification because I am in a dilemma. The day before I am writing this question to you I was suffering from a greater amount of vaginal discharge than I was used to. Because of this I inserted some tissue on what I think is the outer part of my private area because I have read on a separate fatwa that you can insert tissue to stop the flow of discharge so your wudu won’t break. My problem arose when I realized that the fatwa said “insert”, my hymen is still intact so that is why I’m wondering if I really inserted the tissue far enough to where if any discharge flowed out my wudu would still be intact. What is your opinion on this. The tissue was definently inserted somewhere because it didn’t come out unless I took it out so I’m not sure what to think. I prayed form asr to Zuhr the next day like this. And I’ve done this for many salahs in the past. If I pulled out the tissue and saw discharge does that mean my salah was invalid and I must redo each of these salah? Also what is the ruling on waiting to have a fatwa answered before I was to for example wait to reoffer each of these salah if they were invalidated?

Answer

Wa’alaykum as Salam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu,

Any moisture produced from the Vulva (outer portion of the vagina) or even from the vagina itself is pure and does not invalidate Wudhu.

However this ruling is applicable on condition that the discharge is clear or white (normal color). If it is mixed with blood or discharge due to arousal (Madhi) the Wudhu will be invalidated.

Furthermore, you should not insert tissue into your vagina.

As for your prayers, you only need to repeat them if there was blood or arousal discharge on the issue. If not, you do not have to repeat any prayer.

(أما عنده) اي الإمام فهي طاهرة كساير رطوبات البدن …….. وقد علمت أنه يفتي بقول الإمام علي الإطلاق لما في قوله من التوسعة اللتي ينبغي للمفتي أن يميل إليها دفعا للحرج عن الناس إلا في مسايل نص العلماء باالفتوي فيها علي قول غيره (طوالع الأنوار /1ق373/ ب (الأزهرية  26826)

(قوله: برطوبة الفرج) أي: الداخل بدليل قوله أولج. وأما رطوبة الفرج الخارج فطاهرة اتفاقا اهـ ح. وفي منهاج الإمام النووي رطوبة الفرج ليست بنجسة في الأصح. قال ابن حجر في شرحه: وهي ماء أبيض متردد بين المذي والعرق يخرج من باطن الفرج الذي لا يجب غسله، بخلاف ما يخرج مما يجب غسله فإنه طاهر قطعا، ومن وراء باطن الفرج فإنه نجس قطعا ككل خارج من الباطن كالماء الخارج مع الولد أو قبيله. اهـ. وسنذكر في آخر باب الاستنجاء أن رطوبة الولد طاهرة وكذا السخلة والبيضة. (قوله: أما عنده) أي: عند الإمام، وظاهر كلامه في آخر الفصل الآتي أنه المعتمد (رد المحتار – 1 / 313)

وَفِي شَرْحِ الْوِقَايَةِ ثُمَّ وَضْعُ الْكُرْسُفِ مُسْتَحَبٌّ لِلْبِكْرِ فِي الْحَيْضِ وَلِلثَّيِّبِ فِي كُلِّ حَالٍ وَمَوْضِعُهُ مَوْضِعُ الْبَكَارَةِ وَيُكْرَهُ فِي الْفَرْجِ الدَّاخِلِ. اهـ .(البحر الرائق  – 1 / 203)

(ويكره وضعه) اي : وضع جميعه (في الفرج الداخل) لأنه يشبه النكاح بيدها. (ذخر المتأهلين ص 171)
