Standing up for a Shaykh
Assalamualaykum
We have a Shaikh in our area who, when he enters or leaves the Masjid, the Mureeds stand up for him presumably out of respect. Those that are not mureeds feel uncomfortable because they feel obliged to also stand up when Hadhrat walks in. Is this standing up when Hadhrat comes in and, in particular, when he leaves, substantiated in Shariah?
Answer
Wa’alaykum as Salam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu,
There is no problem in standing up out of respect and honour for a person. The prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) once commanded the companions to stand up for Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him):
Abu Said al-Khudri (May Allah be pleased with him) reports: The tribe of Banu Quraiza accepted the judgement of Sa’d (May Allah be pleased with him, so the prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) sent for Sa’d. He came, riding a donkey and when he came near, the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said to the Ansar, “Stand up for your leader.” or he said, “Stand up for the one who is the best amongst you” (Sahih al-Bukhari, 5/112, Sahih Muslim, 3/1388)
It is also clearly stated in the books of Hanafi fiqh that it is permissible to do so, even if it may be in the Masjid.
