Asalaamu Alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu

I am 18, i sometimes work at my fathers shop when they are short staffed. He pays me for the days I work and this money is for my own use, whether I,d like to spend it or save it.

Do I have to pay zakaat on this money?

Answer

Wa’alaykum as Salam wa rahmatullahi wa barkatuhu,

Zakah will be compulsory on the savings at the end of the year, if the total exceeds the Nisaab.

Zakah becomes compulsory on your wealth when it exceeds the Nisaab amount, and this amount of wealth is maintained for the duration of one entire lunar year. If the amount decreases during the year, but at the end of the year it again reaches the Nisaab, Zakah will still be compulsory.

Nisaab is 200 Dirhams (612.35 grams of silver) or the value thereof. At the time of writing this answer, 612.35 grams of silver equal to R4886.63. Thus after deducting all your basic expenses at the end of the year, you should add the salary with other cash, gold/silver jewellery, debts owed to you, stock of trade etc that you have, and if the total exceeds R4886.63, you have to give Zakah on the entire amount.
