Imam or wizard?

12 Aug 2018 Ref-No#: 878

Assalamu Alaikum I am a sixteen years old girl who comes from Albania. I wanted to tell you something that happened to my father when he was 20 years old. At night he often felt suffocated, had nightmares and even other problems. His parents took him to the nearest mosque by an imam for a ruqyah. The imam asked for his mother’s name (my grandmother) and then he did something to him and told him that that night will have a dream, in the dream he will see the face of the person who has practiced black magic. That night my father dreamed the face of one of his relatives (he does not want to say who) and he only told his parents. They said that the imam was stupid and that it was impossible for that person who practiced magic was a relative there because he was not religious at all and knew nothing. They left the question and took it to the doctor. I want to say that my father of this fact had never told me anything, he did not want me to know, my grandmother told me. When my father heard that I knew it, he was so angry, scolding his grandmother and telling me I had to stay out of it. I left him alone, and while I was coming back to him I found him staring at the space with tears in his eyes … what could happen to him? My father is not a believer, in fact he always discusses Islam by saying that religions make no sense. My mother did not practice Islam, but then she decided to start praying and following Islam and my father did not agree that he would pray. Now he lets her pray, but he does not want her to put on her hijab. He wants you to behave like a westerner. I told him that probably when I grow up I will put on the hijab and he told me: “No, you must behave like a normal girl!” Those who put it are oppressed! I will not accept you if you do.
My mom some time ago wanted to bring my brother from another imam to make him ruqyah but my dad got angry saying that he does not want her to take her son from a madman and then they have discussed.
For the rest my father is a very good man, kind and never screaming, so I do not think there is any jinn in him or they did a little magic … What can you tell me about what I told you? Was Imam really a wizard?

Answer

Wa’alaykum as Salam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu,

We are really sorry to hear about your Dad. May Allah guide and cure him….Ameen.

Reading your message, we recall how the Sahaba (companions of the Prophet) were persecuted when they accepted Islam. It reminds us of Mus’ab bin ‘Umair (may Allah be pleased with him) who was shackled and tortured by his own mother. However, he continued to remain steadfast on the Deen of Islam. Thus, you should continue obeying the commandments of Allah, and remember that there is no obedience for any creation when it comes at the disobedience of the Creator.

As for the treatment received, it is not 100% definite and cast in stone that the person he saw is really the person who cast the spell on him. Rather, the devil could have influenced that dream.

Furthermore, we are unable to understand why that Imam did not treat your dad and rather try to cure him. Instead of trying to unveil who done the black magic, he should have rather tried to remove the spell.

We advise that you take your dad to another genuine scholar and try to get him to remove the spell. Also, continue explaining the beauty of Islam to your dad, and constantly make Dua for him.
