Wa’alaykum as Salam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu,

Although, fundamentally, it would be permissible for women to drive (since driving is analogous to riding a camel or horse and the women during the time of Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) rode on such conveyances), but in the light of Quran and Hadith women are to remain indoors. Only under dire circumstances should a woman venture outdoors. Thus, if there is a dire need to venture outdoors, without infringing on any other law of Shariah (eg. hijaab, travelling with a mahram on safr, etc…) then only would she be permitted to drive (Fataawa Rahimiyah v.6 pg. 425)
