Specifying sins during repentance

11 May 2019 Ref-No#: 1660

If a person has repented multiple times already with the intention of repenting for every single act of kufr, shirk, or other sin (whether major or small|), does this person have to specify every moment that he sinned or commmited shirk/kufr during the repentance? Or does it not matter, as long as the person accepts Islamic belief with full sincerity and doesn’t intend to sin again?

Answer

Wa’alaykum as Salam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu,

It is not necessary to specify each and every sin when repenting. Rather, one may make a general repentance for all sins. In fact, at times we may not even remember or know about certain sins, but we find that the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) taught us to repent from those sins too.

So as long as a person intends to rectify himself and repents sincerely, Allah will accept such repentance.
