asalamualaikum, what advice would you give someone who used to watch debates about atheism but now wants to be religious but these doubts and arguments they mentioned from their debates are many and are stuck in his head which when looking i am finding no responses to these doubts and arguments. what is the best thing he could do to remove these doubts or just stop thinking about them.

Answer

Wa’alaykum as Salam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu,

Islam does not oppose intellect. Every aspect of Islam makes perfect logical sense. Our inability to comprehend any aspect of Islam does not mean that it is contradictory to intellect, but that it is beyond our level of understanding. This is similar to trying to explain high school subjects to a primary school child. Obviously, the child will not be able to understand what is being explained to him. This does not mean that the subject being explained contradicts intellect; rather it is beyond the child’s comprehension.

With regard to the doubts the person is having, if he is looking for answers in books or on the internet it is more likely that he will get more confused than he already is.
We would advise that he should rather contact the `Ulama and explain his doubts to them. They would Insha Allah dispel all of them with satisfactory answers, for they have studied Islam in depth.

He should also take out some time daily for the remembrance of Allāh SWT. The zikr of Allāh SWT is a polish for the heart and will prove beneficial in strengthening ones faith and removing all doubts.

He should also read the following dua excessively:

اَللَّهُمَّ إِنِّيْ أَعُوْذُ بِكَ مِنْ عَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ وَوَسْوَسَةِ الصَّدْرِ وَشَتَاتِ الْأَمْرِ

“O Allāh! I seek Your refuge from the punishment of the grave, whispers of the heart and scattering of matters.”
