Disposing of Islamic literature

27 Feb 2018 Ref-No#: 408

I’m scared of kufr If I keep these papers with Jesus written on them and anything that has to do with Christianity. What should we do with a piece of paper with word Jesus (in that sentence he is described as Christians do), Adam (described as Christians do),God (described as Christians do -they are not talking about Allah) written on it?

Should we throw it in rubbish or burn it or bury it?

On the contrary, on some papers I have words such as Quran, Hadith, Quraysh Tribe, Hijra, Muhammad, Ishaq and Ahmed written. What do I do with these?

I generally cut only these words out of sentences so I don’t know anymore if they were referring to Prophet or some other man with the same name. What should I do if I know that they are talking about Prophet, and what if I don’t know?

What If I know that they are not talking about Prophet? And also, I put these little papers (only with words Jesus,Adam,God that are described as christians do) in my wallet. I keep wallet in my bag, but that bag is often on floor when I’m in school. I put it there because I want to have them with me, so that I can destroy them immediately after I receive answer. Is this ok, or should I keep them in my house in a safe place? Please answer on this one also so I can repent if I did something wrong. I check if there is the answer every hour or two, should I do it more often? And on one paper I have written Omar ibn Dasta, does he have to do anything with Islam? can I throw away this one? And the last one for now, If I allowed to bury papers with Quranic verses, do I have to put them in some clean sheets, or I can just put them in ground without anything?

Answer

Wa’alaykum as Salam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu,

It is encouraging to see your enthusiasm to revere and respect the signs of Allāh. Respect is of utmost importance. It is the saying of our pious elders that dīn (the religion of Islam) in its entirety is respect and respect in its total is dīn.

Jesus refers to Sayyidunā`Isā. Although our belief is different to that of the Christians we still respect the name Jesus as it is an English equivalent of `Isa. The same applies to the other names you have cited.

The best way to dispose of papers with the names of Allāh or any other respectable names is to throw them into the ocean or a river. Alternatively, a person could also wrap these sheets in a clean cloth and bury them in a place where people will not trample upon. As a last resort such papers could also be burnt and the ashes be buried.

Your actions are fine and there is no need to fear kufr. It is also fine to keep these papers in your wallet and bag and adequately dispose of them later on.

Since Umar is the name of a great Sahabi, you should discard those papers on which the name of Umar bin Dasta are written in the manner explained above
