Cats as pets

27 Feb 2018 Ref-No#: 425

Asalaam u alaikum wa rahma tullahi wa barakaatu

I’ve recently found a stray cat who I’ve decided to keep. The cat comes into the house but spends a great deal of time outside too. She comes inside with muddy paws sometimes and she is often sandy.

I have learnt that cats are paak animals, so is it okay if she sits on my musallah while I pray salaah or is it napaak?

I’ve also read that Hazrat Abu Hurairah Rahmatullah alayh drank from the same cup as a stray cat, is this allowed?

Is it permissable to feed her cat food that is probably not halaal. She refuses to eat cooked meat unless the cat food is mixed in it.

Shukran wa ahsan uljazaa

Wa’alaykum as Salam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu,

Yes, it will be fine if the cat sits on your musallah. The cat will be regarded as pure (paak).

According to Hanafies, it is makruh tanzihi to drink the leftovers of a cat, unless you are 100 percent sure that the cat did not eat any filth or anything that is haraam.

Any item that is Haraam for a Muslim’s consumption cannot be given to a kaafir and nor to any animal.
