Advice- Gheebah

06 May 2020 Ref-No#: 2448

Asalaamu’Alaikum,

I recently received a marriage proposal. When I saw the picture of the boy, I realised that he is my previous boss where I used to work. I remembered that two of my colleagues once told me that he drinks alcohol and they were very sure about it. I never asked them how they knew and I didn’t ask more to avoid gheebah. When the proposal came, I told my mother that I am not sure but this is what I was told about the person and I have no idea if its true or not but this is what I was told. Was I right in doing so to tell my mother or have I done Gheebah or Buhtan? I am confused, pls help!

Answer

Wa’alaykum as Salam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu,

Yes, it was absolutely necessary for you to point this out to your mom. This would not constitute Ghiba (backbiting)
