School

04 Jan 2021 Ref-No#: 2554

I would have a question regarding a very difficult and sensible topic, as it would have a lot of consequences. Therefore, it is very long, I hope you understand:
I am attending a mixed school in an European country and I am in the last class of High School. It is probably going to end in May/June. I know it is not permissible to go to a mixed school. I am trying with my best to avoid contact to the other sex and I am also known for it. They also don’t talk to me. Furthermore, there subjects like music, latin, where we translate latin texts and learn about rome and maybe going to translate Christian texts, or Philosopy, where we have done the half of the topics and I think it is useful for me to learn about their system, und Biology, where we maybe learn about Darwin, about which I think it is useful as well, as I want to disprove it a time Inschaallah. There is also the thing with corona, my parents and maybe I are in the risk group. I am thinking of making a dua with Ismi Azam, which I know that Allah will it accepts Inscha. And regarding the prayers, the only problem is Zuhr and Asr on Monday, I skipped Biology lessons for it. The country is until 18th January in lockdown and there I can pray without a problem. And before entering this school I cheated and maybe in the first class of this school, too. As I am a good student, it is very very likely, that I would have managed it anyway. I didn’t cheatthe whole year and if I quit now, it will not have any affect regarding those who wanted to study here and did not manage it. I had through cheating only 1, whereas it is wanted to have at least 4V in German, English, Maths and 1 or 2 in other subjects, where I maybe or very little cheated. (It is 1,2,3V,4V,3G,4G,5) In the last year I maybe managed same grades, whereas this school is far more difficult than the old school. And if teachers enter the room, we are supposed to stand up, independently of the teacher. Is the money haram I get from the state?
Furthermore, for example, a teacher ridicules Islam and I stand up, if he enters. He teaches Geography and Economy and he ridicules very rarely, almost not. And if I stand up, I do not respect his personality but his authority as teacher.

Consequences: If I leave, this could lead to fina in my family. My family, especially my father will be sad. He has cancer and is currently in good shape Elhamdullilah and this level of sadness could be dangerous. Furthermore, quitting school does not mean I can avoid mixed athmospheres, because it is normal in the country. I am trying to avoid contact and it has not happen something yet. And I have done a lot of work for the school and very short time before graduation, would very difficult for me.

I am a good student and Elhamdullilah also have ‘Ilm. Therefore I am sure that I can protect my self from their bad ideas. There are also a lot of Muslims in the school and in my class. I said to my family that I want to study abroad after graduation. I want to study Engineering, Science or Medicine in a university, where there I can avoid those.

Question: Should I quit?
Please answer it thoughtfully and explain it to me, as it has a lot of consequences for me. You can ask me, if you want further information. I am Hanafi.

Answer

Wa’alaykum as Salam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu,

We commend you for your zeal to follow the Shari’ah.

Allah Ta’ala knew that males will have to go in environments in which there are females. Hence, He commanded:

Hence, you may attend the lessons, provided you take extra caution to control your gaze, not talk unnecessarily to the opposite gender, and safeguard your chastity.  With the current situation, you have the advantage that most females will be wearing masks.

For this, one’s own knowledge is not sufficient. The devil was also very knowledgeable, yet, he went astray.  It is only Allah who can protect us from our Nafs, and from the evils of the devil.  In verse 21 of Surah an-Nur, Allah says:

وَلَوْلا فَضْلُ اللَّهِ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَتُهُ مَا زَكَا مِنْكُمْ مِنْ أَحَدٍ أَبَدًا

Therefore, implore Allah each day to divinely protect you from succumbing to your Nafs, and from falling in the traps of the devil.

When you make the Dua with Ism al-A’dham, you should include this Dua too.  You may continue with your studies, and make intention that you will use your services for the service and upliftment of Din.

As for missing Dhuhr and ‘Asr due to biology, there is no scope at all for this. You will have to fulfill your prayers, and for Dhuhr, you should also pray the 4 Sunan before, and the two Sunan thereafter. If you need to miss portion of your biology for this, it is fine. If you have Wudhu, you excuse yourself during lessons, and it would not take more than 10 minutes.

Make sincere Tawba for cheating. It will not have any effect if you quit now, and you are doing well. Therefore, you may continue. Whilst there was a sin for cheating (which will be wiped off with Tawba), your income in future will be Halal.

Your intention for standing for the teachers is not to honour their Kufr. You are only standing because you are forced. Hence, that too will be permissible.
